Newcastle ‘edging closer’ to signing Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi

It has been an underwhelming summer transfer window so far for Newcastle United

They have only brought in Lewis Hall, William Osula, Lloyd Kelly and goalkeepers John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos.

But latest reports suggest they are close to making a marquee addition soon.

According to Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie, Newcastle are edging closer to signing Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi.

We previously covered the Magpies are looking at alternatives after their £65 million bid was turned down by the Eagles.

Their chances of signing the England international also appeared to suffer a big blow after Palace agreed to sell Joachim Andersen to Fulham

But Keith Downie now says the South London outfit could sell both defenders before the transfer window shuts on August 30.

Guehi would be an excellent signing for Newcastle who will be aiming for a comeback in 2024-25 after a seventh-place finish last season.

The 24-year-old was an important member for the England national team at the 2024 European Championship. He started six matches for the Three Lions, helping his side make it to the final in Germany.

Guehi also featured in 25 Premier League appearances for Palace last term, averaging 1.1 tackles, 0.7 interceptions and 3.5 clearances per game.

Eddie Howe’s side already have Fabian Schar, Dan Burn and Jamaal Lascelles but all these defenders are over the age of 30.

Lloyd Kelly has arrived at St James’ Park but they need to add a top-quality centre-back as well.
