Newcastle United have been in the market for a new centre-back this summer.
The Magpies already have Fabian Schar, Dan Burn and Jamaal Lascelles but all these defenders are over the age of 30.
They have been attempting to sign England international Marc Guehi before the transfer deadline, and latest reports suggest an agreement is close.
According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle and Crystal Palace are in advanced talks over a £70 million transfer, with Guehi’s future expected to be resolved in the next 48 hours.
If the two clubs agree a deal, then everything will depend on the player whether he wants to leave or stay at the London outfit.
Eddie Howe’s side have made Guehi their number one target this summer.
They have had four bids turned down so far from Palace but are still trying to get a deal over the line for the 24-year-old.
The talented defender was a key member for the England national team at the 2024 European Championship. He started six matches for the Three Lions, helping his side to the final against Spain.
He also played 25 Premier League matches for Crystal Palace last season, averaging an impressive 1.1 tackles and 3.5 clearances per game.
Guehi would be an excellent signing for Newcastle who will be aiming to make a comeback in 2024-25 after a disappointing seventh-place Premier League finish last term.
So far, they have signed Lewis Hall, William Osula, Lloyd Kelly and goalkeepers John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos this summer.
