Newcastle United began their 2024-25 Premier League campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Southampton on Saturday at St James’ Park.
It was an excellent win for the Magpies, but manager Eddie Howe will now be more concerned about landing their key targets before the transfer window shuts on August 30.
They have been chasing a deal to sign Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi but have failed to make a breakthrough in negotiations so far.
Palace are now set to lose defender Joachim Andersen to Fulham in a big blow for the Tyneside club.
But Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie reports the Dane’s move to the Cottagers is unlikely to have an impact on Newcastle’s pursuit of Guehi.
It is said the Magpies’ offer remains on the table and it is up to the two clubs to try and reach a compromise.
However, Eddie Howe’s side are concurrently looking at alternatives as they look to add a centre-back before the end of the month.
It has been a largely disappointing transfer window for Newcastle United. Lewis Hall, William Osula, Lloyd Kelly and goalkeepers John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos are the only arrivals at St James’ Park.
They are working hard to complete a deal for Marc Guehi but have had four bids rejected so far, with their last offer reportedly worth up to £65 million.
The Premier League outfit already have Fabian Schar, Dan Burn and Jamaal Lascelles in central defence but they are all over the age of 30.
Lloyd Kelly has arrived at the club but they need to sign a top-quality defender as well.
