Newcastle United eye move to sign James Trafford

Newcastle United are looking to add a few players in the final few days of the summer transfer window.

According to a report from talkSPORT, the Magpies have reopened talks to sign Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford.

Early in the summer transfer window, the Magpies showed interest in the 21-year-old goalkeeper and had a £15 million bid rejected.

The Magpies signed Odysseas Vlachodimos from Nottingham Forest, but it appears they want to sign another new goalkeeper.

Newcastle are looking to sign Trafford on a loan deal with an obligation to buy to help with PSR requirements.

Trafford missed the opening game for Burnley through injury, but he returned on Saturday for the clash with Sunderland.

Scott Parker has hailed him as an “exceptional” player, but he has refused to rule out a potential exit. Burnley have lost several key players this summer, and Parker expects more movements in the final few days of the window.

Parker said: “What happens in the future? I don’t know, I can’t answer that. But as of now, this is someone who I thought was brilliant on Monday night. He showed his quality again.

“He’s another one that had a tough season last year but he’s an exceptional keeper and he showed every bit of his quality on Monday night.”

Craig Hope of The Daily Mail has shared that Trafford could leave Burnley this week. Newcastle will have to sell either Martin Dubravk or Vlachodimos or both, if they want to sign Trafford.

He wrote on X: “NUFC always intended to revisit James Trafford deal. I’m told Burnley keeper believes he can still join this week.

“He’d thought it was close earlier in summer (personal terms not an issue). But it will need NUFC to loan/sell at least one (if not both) of Vlachodimos/Dubravka.”

It would come as a huge surprise if Newcastle decide to offload Vlachodimos. Dubravka will definitely drop down the pecking order this season, so he could be offloaded.
