Newcastle United want Fiorentina attacking midfielder Nico Gonzalez

Newcastle United remain interested in recruiting the services of Fiorentina attacking midfielder Nico Gonzalez this summer, according to Italian outlet Calcio Mercato.

The Magpies reportedly tabled a bid for the Argentina international last month and are still very much in the race for his signature.

However, they will face competition from Juventus and Atalanta who would both love to keep him in the Serie A.

Gonzalez has been tipped to leave Fiorentina after three seasons in the Italian top-flight, but whether Newcastle can lure him to England remains to be seen after Brentford failed with a €40 million bid last summer.

The Purples rejected the offer and the winger was not keen on joining the Bees either, but things have changed this summer, with the player and his representatives set to meet with the club on Monday where he is expected to tell them he wants to leave.

It is a boost for Newcastle and other suitors, but convincing him to join them ahead of Juve and Atalanta could prove tricky.

Gonzalez ended last season with 16 goals and five assists in 44 appearances after notching 14 goals and five assists in 2022-23 and eight goals and nine assists in 2021-22, and Newcastle could do with such an attacker within their ranks.

The two-time Copa America winner has missed out on two Europa Conference League titles and a Coppa Italia after losing the finals of the competitions over the last two seasons, and a move to where he can be guaranteed silverware will be more appealing to him.

Newcastle missed out on Europe for 2024-25 despite finishing seventh last term in the Premier League, with Manchester United denying them a spot in the group stages of the Europa Conference League after winning the FA Cup.

Not playing continental football has dealt a blow on the Magpies in the transfer market as some of their targets would prefer moving to suitors playing in Europe, which could be the case with Gonzalez, with Juve and Atalanta playing in the Champions League.
