Nottingham Forest are in talks with Feyenoord over a blockbuster move for striker Santiago Gimenez.
The Premier League outfit already tabled a €25 million bid for the Mexican forward. However, the Dutch giants swiftly rejected the offer. They value their star asset at between €40 and €45 million.
According to AS, dsepite the valuation gap, Forest are expected to return with an improved proposal in the coming days.
Gimenez has emerged as one of Europe’s hottest properties following an impressive campaign, catching the eye of several top clubs, including Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, and Juventus.
In his first season in the Netherlands, he spearheaded the Rotterdam-based outfit to the Eredivisie title under now-Liverpool manager Arne Slot with 15 goals and two assists despite a rocky start.
The 23-year-old‘s stock improved last term as he notched 23 league goals and six assists in 30 appearances. He recorded 26 goals and eight assists in 41 outings across all competitions.
He struggled for form in the second half of the season but has rediscovered his scoring touch under new manager Brian Priske this season.
In Feyenoord’s three games so far, he has bagged four goals and two assists and looks imperious as they challenge PSV Eindhoven for the Eredivisie title.
His goalscoring exploits have intensified interest in his services, but Forest are currently leading the chase for his signature.
Forest have Chris Wood and Taiwo Awoniyi on their books, but both men are injury-prone.
Awoniyi, in particular, is a worry for the club. He missed a chunk of last season through injury. He replaced Wood in Forest’s Premier League opener against AFC Bournemouth but suffered another setback.
The 27-year-old striker has contributed 17 goals and four assists in 54 appearances. But in the two years since joining from Union Berlin, he has missed 35 games for club and country.
Forest need firepower to secure another season in the Premier League and have turned to Gimenez.
