Celtic have agreed a deal to sell Mikey Johnston to Sheffield United.
The Hoops already sold Matt O’Riley to Brighton, while Gustaf Lagerbielke moved to FC Twente on a season-long loan.
According to a report from Sky Sports, the Bhoys have agreed a deal worth around £2.5 million to sell Johnston.
Sheffield United are aiming to secure promotion to the Premier League, and they have been in talks this week over a potential deal.
The Republic of Ireland international has progressed through the youth ranks at Celtic and has made 93 appearances for the senior side, scoring 13 goals.
Last season, he managed two goals in 12 games for Celtic, but it wasn’t good enough for him to continue under Brendan Rodgers.
He was then loaned to West Brom where he made a strong impact under Carlos Corberan. He scored seven goals and provided two assists in 20 games for the Baggies, and the Blades will hope that he can replicate that form for them.
After his superb performance in the 4-1 win against Huddersfield Town last season, where he scored a brace, Sky Sports pundit David Prutton described his impact as “stunning”.
The move will suit all parties involved. Johnston is a fantastic winger but Rodgers wanted to see more from him. It would have dropped down the pecking order at the club if he had stayed.
At 25, Johnston will be looking to join a club where he will be playing regularly. He has the ability to make an impact, and certainly, he can deliver for Sheffield as well.
However, his departure could open the door for Celtic to sign Sheffield United centre-back Auston Trusty.
Celtic are looking to bolster their defence in the closing stages of the transfer window, and they have made an offer already for the USA international.
After establishing a good relationship by selling Johnston to them, the Hoops can expect to smoothly carry out the deal for Trusty.
