Sheffield Wednesday in talks to sign Everton defender Mason Holgate

Everton are in talks to sell defender Mason Holgate in the summer transfer window.

According to Alan Myers, Championship outfit Sheffield Wednesday are in talks with the Toffees to sign Holgate.

The 27-year-old defender will become a free agent next summer, and in any case, he is going to leave the club.

Holgate joined the Toffees from Barnsley back in 2015 and has made 150 appearances in all competitions.

In between, he has spent loan spells at West Bromwich Albion, Southampton and Sheffield United.

Holgate is not in Sean Dyche’s first-team plans, and his future could be sorted before the 11 pm deadline.

Holgate has been heavily linked with a move to French club Olympique Lyonnais this summer.

According to Paul Joyce, the move to Lyon has fallen through. This will open the door for Sheffield Wednesday to take him to Hillsborough.

Holgate has loads of Premier League experience, but with no top-tier showing interest in signing him, he should accept a move to the Championship to resurrect his career.

He would get regular games at Wednesday, something he has lacked in recent years at Everton. The Toffees will not offer him a contract extension, and the time is probably right for him to leave the club permanently.

Everton have Jarrad Branthwaite, James Tarkowski and Michael Keane as major centre-backs, while the centre-back department has been bolstered by signing Jake O’Brien in the summer from Lyon.

With Everton operating on a tight budget and takeover problems yet to be resolved, it would be a smart decision to get players off their wage bills who are not in the manager’s plans.

He has regressed in recent years and didn’t do enough to change Dyche’s minds during his previous two loan spells.

Put simply, Holgate has become surplus to requirements at the club. Dyche didn’t trust him to feature during the time of defensive crisis at Everton, which shows that his time at Goodison Park has truly come to an end.
