Southampton eye loan move for Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale

Southampton are looking to sign a new goalkeeper this summer and they are checking on several options.

Earlier this week, Fabrizio Romano claimed that the Saints are in talks to sign Dutch goalkeeper Justin Bijlow as they are looking to find a goalkeeper who can provide competition for Alex McCarthy’s number-one spot.

However, it appears that Southampton are checking on other options as well.

According to a report from Sky Sports, Southampton are preparing to make a formal bid to sign Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale this summer.

The Saints are preparing a loan bid for the England goalkeeper, who has dropped down the pecking order at Arsenal.

Ramsdale lost his starting role last season to David Raya, and his situation is unlikely to change in the current season. The Gunners have signed Raya permanently from Brentford, and Ramsdale will become the second choice at the club.

The former Sheffield United goalkeeper featured 11 times for the Gunners in 2023-24, and out of which only six of them have come in the Premier League.

Southampton will get an experienced goalkeeper who has managed 215 appearances across all clubs. He is a very reliable goalkeeper, and all he needs is regular game time to get his confidence back.

Ideally, Arsenal want to sell Ramsdale permanently or on loan with an obligation to buy. Southampton are simply looking to get him on loan at the moment, and it remains to be seen if the deal includes the option to buy him next summer.

Wolves have held talks for the goalkeeper and they could provide strong competition in the race to sign Ramsdale.

This has been a massive transfer window for Southampton, who have added more than 11 players this summer. Ideally, Southampton would love to sign both Ramsdale and Bijlow, but even if they get the Arsenal goalkeeper on board, it would represent a fantastic signing.
