Wolves close to signing Crystal Palace goalkeeper Sam Johnstone

Wolverhampton Wanderers are in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer.

They are reportedly open to offers for Jose Sa who has conceded eight goals in their opening two Premier League matches this campaign.

Gary O’Neil’s side identified Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale as a quality replacement for the Portuguese, but they failed to finalise a move for the 26-year-old.

Ramsdale lost his place to David Raya last season and he is seeking first-team football elsewhere.

Wolves couldn’t complete a move for the England international as the deal proved to be too expensive for them (per BBC Sport).

Now The Athletic’s David Ornstein is reporting the Old Gold are close to reaching an agreement with Crystal Palace over a move for Sam Johnstone.

It is said the two clubs are working towards a deal worth around £10 million for the 31-year-old.

Johnstone joined the Eagles in 2022 from West Bromwich Albion and has gone on to make 34 senior appearances, with 11 clean sheets to his name.

However, the 31-year-old wants to leave Selhurst Park before the transfer deadline as manager Oliver Glasner prefers Dean Henderson who started the opening two matches for the South Londoners.

Johnstone boasts a lot of experience as he has made 353 appearances during his stints at clubs like West Brom, Aston Villa, Palace and Doncaster Rovers.

Wolves have seen some high-profile departures this summer, with Max Kilman and Pedro Neto joining West Ham United and Chelsea respectively in big money transfers.

But despite the outgoings, funds are said to be tight at the Molineux Stadium and therefore they were not ready to spend a lot to sign Ramsdale from Arsenal.
