Liverpool suffered their first defeat of the season on Saturday at Anfield, losing 1-0 to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.
Until this point, the Reds had won all of their opening three games quite comfortably. It was expected that they would pick up momentum straight after the international break, but the Reds just couldn’t get the rhythm going.
Forest were simply brilliant and were very solid at the back. They didn’t allow Liverpool to create enough clear-cut chances, and it forced Slot to make major changes in the second half.
Alan Shearer wasn’t too impressed with the performance of Darwin Nunez, who came on as a substitute in place of Diogo Jota.
Speaking on Match of the Day, Shearer said while watching the footage of Forest’s goal that the 25-year-old didn’t add anything to the game.
Shearer said: “This is the Forest goal. Liverpool on the attack, Milenkovic was too strong for Nunez when he came on. He didn’t add anything to the game.”
Darwin Nunez has been below par for Liverpool
The Uruguayan striker has yet to start a Premier League game so far. He has only played from the bench in three games and has yet to score for the Reds.
Shearer is absolutely spot on that Nunez didn’t contribute anything to the game, especially in terms of creativity.
He is lacking confidence at the moment and probably needs more time to adapt to Arne Slot’s system, but he needs to work hard to impress the Dutchman.
It is a setback for Liverpool, but they need to get over it with loads of coming up. The Reds travel to San Siro to face AC Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday, and Nunez will be hoping to make an impact.
