Aston Villa player ratings v Young Boys

Aston Villa secured a comfortable 3-0 win against Young Boys at the Wankdorf Stadium in Bern on Tuesday night.

Played on an artificial surface, Villa found it hard initially to control the game. But goals from Youri Tielemans and Jacob Ramsey in the first half gave them a healthy lead at the break.

Villa controlled the game nicely in the second half and got their third goal through Amadou Onana.

Here, Sports View have rated the Aston Villa players out of 10 for their performances against Young Boys.

Emi Martinez – 8

The Argentine made a superb save inside the opening 15 minutes to deny Ebrima Colley. Made a terrific save in the second half after a sloppy error from Costa.

Lucas Digne – 6

Lively from the left-hand side, as always, Digne’s low crosses were a threat throughout the game.

Pau Torres – 7

Calm and cool with the ball on his feet, he made sure Villa remain tight at the back. He didn’t need to make big tackles, but won a lot of ariel duels.

Ezri Konsa – 7

Rock solid at the back as always and made sure they kept a clean sheet, which could be crucial in this format.

Lamare Bogarde – 3

The Dutch defender struggled throughout the first 45 minutes, as the home side created most of the attacks from his side. He looked uncomfortable against their pacey wingers, and especially Colley. Subbed at half-time.

John McGinn – 8

He made a darting run into the box and had a shot on goal; he just couldn’t keep it down. The Scottish midfielder produced a brilliant cross from the left, leading to Villa’s goal through Tielemans.

Youri Tielemans – 8

The former Leicester City man picked his spot brilliantly when McGinn found him unmarked into the box. Terrific finish. He had a decent effort on goal in the second half.

Amadou Onana – 7

Largely anonymous in the first half. While he did show more energy in the second half, and scored a spectacular goal towards the end of the match. His first in European football.

Jacob Ramsey – 9

In the first half, he made room for himself just outside the box and had a shot on goal. Showed great presence of mind to pounce on the loose ball and scored from close range. He made a real difference. Nearly scored another in the 2nd half, but his shot was saved by the goalie. MOTM.

Morgan Rogers – 8

Lively throughout the game and played a huge part in the build-up to the second goal. His link-up play with Watkins and his darting runs into the box were superb.

Ollie Watkins – 6

He could’ve had a penalty, but Ramsey pounced on the error quickly. Watkins thought he had scored, but the goal was ruled out after a VAR check. Harsh decision.

Substitutes

Diego Carlos (on for Bogarde – 2nd half)

Jhon Duran (on for Watkins – 60th min)

He scored again! His finishing was absolutely magnificent, but the goal was disallowed.

Ross Barkley (on for Ross Barkley 87 min) – NA

Emiliano Buendia (on for Ramsey 87 min) – NA

Ian Maatsen (on for Digne 87 min) – NA
