Celtic dealt potential injury blow as Alistair Johnston forced off in first-half of Canada vs USA

Celtic have been handed a huge injury scare after Canadian international Alistair Johnston appeared to pick up a knock against the United States of America on Saturday night.

The Hoops star lasted just 24 minutes into the friendly before he was replaced by Richard Laryea.

Johnston could not shake off the injury and was unable to continue, and the development could leave Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers sweating on his fitness.

The 25-year-old has started in every game the Parkhead club have played in 2024-25, weighing in with a goal and an assist in his five appearances so far.

Celtic return to action after the international break on September 14 when they take on Heart of Midlothian before their Champions League opener against Slovan Bratislava four days later, and being without the Canadian will be a huge blow.

The Scottish Premiership champions are already hoping centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers will be fit against Hearts after he was spotted in a moon boot after their game against Rangers, and they could potentially be without two key defenders if tests carried out on the duo in the coming days turn out to be bad news.

Celtic will hope for some good news over Johnston, and Rodgers will likely have to play Anthony Ralston at right-back if the Canadian is unavailable for selection after the break.

While summer arrival Arne Engels can also play there, the Belgian was signed to replace Matt O’Riley and play in the middle of the park, and deploying him at right-back will be a last resort.
