Chris Sutton: Rangers fans will feel Philippe Clement is treating them like fools if he told them Sunday clash vs Celtic was close

Rangers lost 3-0 to Celtic at Parkhead on Sunday in their first Old Firm derby of 2024-25, but manager Philippe Clement praised their performance, claiming the final result would have been 3-3 if his players had converted their scoring chances.

Of a truth, both sides had four shots on target apiece, but the hosts were by far the better team, and Chris Sutton believes Rangers fans are not worried about stats, average age and a record score vs Ross County – things their manager prided in after the game.

The Sky Sports pundit claims the Light Blues faithful will feel Clement is treating them like fools if he insists the game was a close one.

Some Rangers fans confronted the Belgian after the game following the woeful performance they saw from their side, with Celtic already five points ahead of them in the race for the title this term.

The Bears currently sit in fourth place in the league table after four games, behind leaders Celtic, Aberdeen and Dundee United.

Rangers made some decent transfers during the summer transfer window, adding Neraysho Kasanwirjo, Nadim Barjami, Jefte, Oscar Cortes, Clinton Nsiala, Connor Barron, Liam Kelly, Hamza Igamane, Robin Propper, Vaclav Cerny and Mohamed Diomande to their squad.

However, some of the new additions were unable to influence the proceedings against Celtic and it will be interesting to see whether they have what it takes to improve the squad going forward.

Rangers return to Premiership action after the September international break to face unbeaten Dundee United at Tannadice Park, and they need to get their campaign back on track and leave with all three points if they want to win title number 56 this term.
