Lee Carsley confirmed that former Manchester United star Mason Greenwood is not under consideration for England selection.
The 22-year-old left United to join Marseille this summer in a £27 million deal. And he has hit the ground running at the Stade Vélodrome, scoring five goals in three Ligue 1 appearances.
However, despite his impressive club form, the young winger is unlikely to feature for the national team.
At a press conference on Friday ahead of their game against Ireland, Interim boss Lee Carsley confirmed they will not consider Greenwood for selection.
He said: ‘Mason wasn’t a player that we can consider, to be honest, no. I’m aware of how he’s doing, but he wasn’t under consideration.’
Greenwood is an academy product of Manchester United, who made his competitive debut in 2019 against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League
He went on to make 129 senior appearances for the Red Devils, with 35 goals and 12 assists to his name.
However, the 22-year-old suffered irreparable damage to his reputation after he was arrested in January 2022 for attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault.
The charges were later dropped the following year and Manchester United had considered re-integrating him back into the squad.
However, they were forced to make a U-turn on their decision following a huge backlash from the supporters.
Greenwood impressed during his loan spell at Getafe last season, scoring 10 goals in 36 appearances across all competitions.
Many clubs were reportedly interested in acquiring his services this summer but Marseille won the transfer race for the talented forward in the end.
