Gabby Agbonlahor says he would have left Newcastle United to accept the England job had he been Eddie Howe.
Howe has done a terrific job at Newcastle in the past two seasons, and he is seen as one of the candidates for the England managerial job after Gareth Southgate stepped down from his role.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Agbonlahor suggests that Howe must have become frustrated with Newcastle’s lack of signings in the summer transfer window and the club’s failure to land Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.
The popular football pundit has also predicted that the Magpies will not finish in the top four in the Premier League this season.
“100% now,” said Agbonlahor when asked if he would take the England job if he were Eddie Howe.
“Because the frustration. I don’t think Newcastle will finish in the top four. I don’t think their squad has got enough depth in it. He [Howe] would have been disappointed not to get Guehi in, even more replacements upfront.”
Eddie Howe could be tempted to quit Newcastle if he gets the England job
Howe hasn’t received any offers from the England FA, but he could be tempted to become the national team manager if he is offered the job.
The summer window has been really frustrating for him. The Magpies had to sell two talented young players just to avoid the PSR threat, and they haven’t been able to add quality players to their ranks.
Howe chased Guehi all summer, but Newcastle couldn’t reach an agreement for the Crystal Palace defender. It came as a big surprise that Newcastle didn’t look for other alternatives.
Agbonlahor is spot on that the squad is not strong enough, despite the fact that the Magpies have made a strong start to the season. The return of Sandro Tonali will be seen as a new signing for the club, but the frustration will still linger.
