Celtic won the opening game of the Champions League for the first time in many years, and they did it some style.
The Bhoys earned a 5-1 win against Slovakian side Slovan Bratislava on Wednesday night (18 September) at Celtic Park, and their performance was widely praised by pundits.
It was an impressive display from Celtic, and the players displayed hunger and intent throughout the match.
There will be tough challenges ahead, but the Hoops have shown what they are capable of at home turf, and it will definitely lay the foundation to do well going forward.
James McFadden said that what was really impressive about Celtic is that they have been better in almost every department. He says the Bhoys have shown an “unbelievable” appetite and their work-rate has been phenomenal.
The popular pundit said on BBC Sportsound, as quoted by BBC Sport: “They have shown unbelievable appetite to go and chase the ball down, their work-rate has been phenomenal and, overall, the quality was so much higher than Slovan Bratislava.”
Celtic showed ruthless edge infront of goal
The Bhoys have made a great start to their new season. They are flying in the Scottish Premiership at the moment, having won all of their games. Plus, they have not conceded a single goal in the league so far.
In recent years, Celtic have underperformed in the Champions League, but Brendan Rodgers feels that his side is now well-equipped to do well in Europe. The new format, with 36 teams in total, should boost Celtic’s chances of progressing to the next round.
Liam Scales scored the opening goal for the Bhoys in the first half. Kyogo Furuhashi, Arne Engels, Daizen Maeda and Adam Idah all scored in the next 45 minutes, as Celtic enjoyed a memorable night.
They were ruthless and dynamic on the night and scored four goals in the second half, taking their game to a new level altogether.
