Dave King has expressed his desire to return to Ibrox as Rangers chairman after John Bennett stepped down.
King has suggested that he is willing to return for two years and believes he has the experience to run the club smoothly.
Bennett resigned on health grounds last week, and John Gilligan has stepped in as the Glasgow club is badly looking for some stability.
King has also suggested that Rangers are still an attractive club for foreign investors and feels that the money should come from outside rather than from within the club.
Keith Jackson, however, thinks that King’s reputation has been badly damaged by his “chaotic” first stint at the club. Jackson says that he might pour fuel into the fire of the situation, which is already beyond control.
He wrote for The Daily Record: “Probably not. King’s credibility as a leader was badly damaged by his chaotic first stint in the big seat. His instincts to start a fight in an empty room might just pour fuel onto a fire which is already raging out of control.”
It will be really interesting to see if King returns for another spell at the club. He is pitching interesting ideas of getting investment from foreign sources, possibly the Middle East, and it might tempt some of the board members.
Graeme Souness and Philippe Clement both have mentioned a £50 million investment into the squad that will make Rangers a superpower in Scotland ahead of Celtic, and that is not possible with cheques coming from the club members.
There is no denying the fact that a huge gulf exists between Rangers and Celtic in terms of finances. Celtic have been able to pour ridiculous money into developing the squad, and Rangers can’t even think of matching those numbers with the current set-up.
Rangers are a massive club, and if any wealthy investor is willing to pour money in with good intentions, it should be welcomed. Having said that, there is always the fear of FFP regulations, so the club need to do a proper background check, even if King is appointed again.
