Liverpool boss shares what he told his players at half-time vs Manchester United

Liverpool 2024/25 Season Preview – Fixtures, Transfers, Potential XI, Prediction

Liverpool secured an excellent victory over bitter rivals Manchester United in Sunday’s blockbuster Premier League game.

The Old Trafford encounter was expected to be difficult for the Reds who lost to United in the FA Cup quarter-final last season and were also held to a draw in April.

However, the Merseyside giants dominated proceedings from the beginning and cruised to a 2-0 lead at half-time, despite Trent Alexander-Arnold having a goal disallowed for offside.

Luis Diaz headed home the opener after 35 minutes before adding another with a brilliant strike seven minutes later.

Erik ten Hag’s men threatened to score as Noussair Mazraoui forced Alisson Becker into making a good save just before the interval.

Manager Arne Slot knew the Red Devils would press aggressively in the second-half and told Diaz to keep up his defensive duties despite being outstanding in attack.

Slot told his players at half-time (via BBC Sport): “We said they were going to press aggressively, but I showed them three moments where one situation that led to a chance for Mazraoui.

“Luis [Diaz] was not tracking back as he should. Those moments can change the game at Old Trafford.

“It’s a good win”.

There was no comeback for Manchester United in the second-half as they failed to breach Liverpool’s defence.

Mohamed Salah, after setting up Diaz’s two goals, got in on the act with his third strike of the campaign, beating Andre Onana with a superb finish.

The 3-0 victory means the Reds have picked up all nine points from their opening three league matches. Only Manchester City is the other Premier League team who have yet to drop a point this season.

Liverpool’s impressive form could continue over the following weeks this month as Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth and Wolverhampton Wanderers are next on their fixtures list.
