Liverpool have SC Freiburg midfielder Merlin Rohl on their list of targets and have scouted him on several occasions, and their interest has seen the Bundesliga club offer him a new contract, according to Sport Bild head of football Christian Falk.
The 22-year-old, described as ‘very dangerous’ and ‘very quick’ by Germany under-21 head coach Antonio Di Salvo, has impressed Liverpool with his performances for club and country so far.
The Reds manager Arne Slot wants a central midfielder after missing out on Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi in the summer, and Rohl has now emerged as a target going forward.

The 22-year-old is currently injured after Freiburg confirmed that he suffered a syndesmosis tear after an ankle injury earlier this month, and he is expected to be sidelined for several months as a result.
Nevertheless, Liverpool will continue to keep tabs on his situation and could move for his services next summer.
Freiburg claimed last week that Rohl has agreed on an early contract extension with them, but they have refused to disclose the details of the new deal.
His former coach at Ingolstadt, Tomas Oral, believes Rohl is the complete midfielder as he is a brilliant player defensively and offensively, and Liverpool could do with such a player within their ranks.
The youngster is an excellent dribbler capable of getting past his opponents comfortably, and he can also play at left-back as he is agile and is both-footed.
Standing at 6ft 3in, the Liverpool target has been regularly compared to Bayern Munich and Germany star Leon Goretzka, with his eye for a pass and the opposition goal qualities which make him stand out.
