Martin O’Neill has torn apart Graeme Souness on talkSPORT over his recent comments on Celtic and Rangers.
The Hoops earned an emphatic 3-0 victory over Rangers in the latest Old Firm derby clash last week, prior to the international break.
It was a complete domination from Celtic, and it was clearly apparent that there was a vast gap between the two sides.
Souness, however, feels that while a gap exists between the two sides, it is not as big as many are suggesting, and it will eventually diminish if Rangers start to pour money into the squad, which he suggests around £50 million.
It was five successive home wins for Celtic at Celtic Park, and Brendan Rodgers has just lost only once in 19 Old Firm games.
O’Neill, one of the most successful managers at Celtic, has blasted Souness for his recent comments, saying the former great Liverpool player is “deluding” himself.
“Graeme is deluding himself, absolutely. Because there is a gap. There’s a chasm between them,” said O’Neill on talkSPORT.
“In the game itself over a course of 90 minute period, they might actually be close, and if you’re beating one or two nil, then you can make all sorts of thoughts about it in terms of well that game was close.
“But actually that game wasn’t close at all. Celtic were far far better.”
Martin O’Neill is absolutely spot on with his assessment on Celtic
The Hoops are miles ahead of Rangers at the moment. Last season, the Gers fought brilliantly to close the gap with the Bhoys, but they faded away towards the end of the season.
Celtic, on the other hand, found their form at the right moment, and they went to hit new gears once they got control of the league position. This is a hallmark of a fantastic team run by a top-class manager who has brought a winning mentality to the club.
The Scottish champions have been remarkably consistent in domestic spheres and they have made smart recruitments. They have reached the Champions League group stages and should now be aiming to reach the knockout stages.
Finance can be a big factor as well. Rangers are not properly run, and too many managerial changes in recent years have resulted in a lack of stability at the club.
Celtic have lost quality players in recent years, but they have made solid recruits and have made the squad competitive. The scenario can definitely change in the next few years, but right now, Celtic are head and shoulders ahead of their rivals.
