Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah has suggested that the present campaign could be his last season at Anfield.
Salah is in the final year of his contract at Anfield, and he has yet to receive a new offer from the Reds hierarchy.
There is no doubt that the Egyptian maestro is a legend at the club, and what he has achieved at Liverpool is phenomenal, but at the same time, the club is probably dithering to offer him a bumper contract, considering his age.
Salah has turned 32, but he is looking sharp and energetic and enjoying his best form.
He has managed three goals and three assists already in the Premier League, and Jamie Carragher rightly says that he is Liverpool’s third-most influential player in the club’s history after Kenny Dalglish and Steven Gerrard.
Speaking on the Rest is Football podcast, Micah Richards says that Liverpool cannot afford to let a player go of his calibre for free, and he expects Salah to sign a two-year contract extension at the club.
Richards said: “I think he will sign a new deal. I think he’ll sign another two years. I don’t think Liverpool can let him go for free.”
Gary Lineker added: “It’s up to Salah, then.”
Richards added: “Yeah, I think they’ll convince him. You can tell he is very much in his (Arne Slot’s) plans.”
Salah was outstanding for Liverpool at Old Trafford as the Reds earned a thumping 3-0 win against Manchester United.
He provided two assists for Luis Diaz and scored the third goal that killed the tie completely.
Salah is loved and adored by the fans, and he is highly respected by everyone at the club. Richards is spot on that there’s no point selling a player who has a few top years left in him for free next summer.
Daniel Sturridge also felt that Salah probably doesn’t want to leave in his mind and he could be putting pressure on Michael Edwards to offer him a new deal.
Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk are also in the final years of their contracts at Liverpool. It is unclear what the Reds are going to do with Van Dijk, but they should be able to offer a lucrative deal to Trent to keep him at the club for years to come.
