Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold produced a masterclass performance for England, helping his side win 2-0 against Finland on Tuesday night at Wembley.
The 25-year-old right-back started the game and produced a terrific performance for his country. He also registered an assist for the opening goal.
Harry Kane scored twice on the night, but it was Alexander-Arnold’s overall performance that has earned him rich plaudits.
The Daily Mail has hailed him as “superb” and gave him an 8/10 rating.
Craig Hope wrote: “Superb ball for opener and exploited space with passing showreel in second half. Fine assist for Kane’s second.”
Liverpool must sort out his contract situation quickly
Alexander-Arnold is a world-class player, and there is no second doubt about it. Gareth Southgate experimented with him and used the defender in midfield during the Euro Championships.
He is someone who can create chances with defence-splitting passes, and Lee Carsley has done the right thing by using him in his natural position.
At Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold is given the freedom to express himself and Arne Slot, like Jurgen Klopp, allows the Liverpudlian to drift into midfield when necessary.
Alexander-Arnold has entered the final year of his contract at Anfield, and Liverpool must sort out his situation quickly. There is no way the club can lose him for free, and they must offer him a new deal at the earliest.
The Reds have made a fantastic start to their new season, winning all of their opening three matches, including a thumping victory against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Alexander-Arnold has been influential in all the games Liverpool have played so far, and hopefully, he will continue doing the same. Slot has used Alexander-Arnold carefully, though at times, the defender has looked frustrated, especially when he is taken off.
Liverpool will take on Nottingham Forest at Anfield on Saturday (14 September) in the Premier League after the international break.
