Newcastle United played out a 1-1 draw with Manchester City on Saturday at St James’ Park in the Premier League.
The Magpies went behind after Josko Gvardiol struck the opener with a smart finish on 35 minutes.
However, the hosts managed to level the scores early in the second half after being awarded a penalty for Ederson’s challenge on Anthony Gordon.
The 23-year-old forward stepped up to take the spot-kick and coolly sent it to the bottom left-corner.
Both teams threatened to snatch a winner but ultimately settled for a point each.
The national press were effusive in their praise of Newcastle for forcing the champions to share the spoils. But they were particularly impressed with Gordon. who is now reportedly close to penning a new long-term contract at the Tyneside club.
The Sunday Mirror called him the ‘inevitable hero’ after he went down to win the penalty from which he scored.
In the absence of Alexander Isak, the 23-year-old was tasked with leading the line on Saturday and he performed the role brilliantly.
Gordon showed good energy and tenacity to trouble the City defenders. He also completed 15 of his 17 passes, made two key passes and won four of his 10 ground duels.
The England international has been a key member of Eddie Howe’s team this season. He has started all six Premier League matches so far, with two goals to his name.
