'Nearly sold the pies' - Chris Sutton slams Matz Sels after mistake in Liverpool clash

Chris Sutton slammed Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels after his error during the clash against Liverpool on Saturday afternoon.

Both teams came into the match with unbeaten records, although Liverpool were looking to extend their impressive winning streak to four matches on the spin.

Forest were also keen to get back to winning ways after heading into the international break on the back of a 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

They were on the back foot for most of the opening period against Liverpool, but at 0-0, Sels made an error that nearly gave Liverpool the lead.

“Matz Sels wouldn’t have slept for a month,” Sutton said on BBC live blog. “Sels nearly sold the pies.

“The header was too high for Diaz, and he loops a header up in the air – it is a standard catch for a 12-year-old goalkeeper, never mind a Premier League goalkeeper.

“How it doesn’t go over the line, I don’t know. Sels, you are awfully lucky.”

Despite the error, Sels emerged from the contest as the man of the match, helping Forest pull off a shocking 1-0 win over the previously unbeaten Liverpool.

Callum Hudson-Odoi came off the bench to bag a 72nd-minute goal that proved to be the point of difference between both sides, helping the Tricky Trees claim their first win at Anfield in 55 years.

The win means Forest are off to a flyer this season, picking up eight points from four games (W2, D2) and sitting fourth on the Premier League table as things stand.

Sutton was full of praise for Forest after the memorable win, but it’s back to the drawing board for Arne Slot and Liverpool after seeing their unbeaten start to the season come to an abrupt end on home turf.

“Arne Slot’s honeymoon period is over, plenty of work to do,” Sutton said after the game.

“All credit to Forest, they were on fire. They defended brilliantly and then carried that threat. Nuno Espírito Santo making positive substitutions.

“Forest with the three points, and they will be made up with the manner of their performance.”
