Richard Keys delivers strong verdict on Joelinton penalty appeal in Newcastle v Man City

Newcastle United secured a 1-1 draw against Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday at St James’ Park.

City took the lead in the first half through defender Josko Gvardiol, who had put the visitors ahead after 35 minutes.

Newcastle restored parity after the break through Anthony Gordon, who scored from the spot. It was a controversial decision, and Alan Shearer felt that it should not have been given.

The Magpies appealed for another penalty shortly afterwards when Kyle Walker appeared to have tripped Joelinton into the box. The replays showed that Walker clearly fouled him in the box, and made no attempt to get the ball.

The decision was overturned, and Richard Keys felt that it was “nailed” on penalty.

He wrote on X: “That was a nailed on 2nd pen. Walker made no attempt at all the play the ball.”

A massive result for Newcastle United

Eddie Howe was looking for a strong reaction after his side lost 3-1 against Fulham in the previous game.

They created some fantastic opportunities, and probably, the scoreline would have been different if they had Alexander Isak upfront.

Gordon ran the show once again, and the draw is probably a fair result in the end.

Bernardo Silva made a strong attempt in the dying minutes of the game, but Nick Pope made a spectacular save to keep the scoreline level.

For the second game in a row, City have dropped points and it has allowed Liverpool to move to the top of the table after they won 2-1 against Wolves at Molineux.

Newcastle have made a strong start, too, and they should be aiming to get into the top four this season. The Magpies will face AFC Wimbledon in the league cup in midweek in the Carabao Cup.
