Troy Deeney blown away by Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta

Crystal Palace earned a 2-2 draw at Selhurst Park on Saturday in the Premier League against Leicester City.

Troy Deeney has showered heaps of praise on Eagles striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, who scored twice during the game, including a stoppage-time equaliser.

Despite a lively start from the home side, the Foxes took the lead through Jamie Vardy in the first half. Stephy Mavididi added another after just 26 seconds into the second half, pouncing on the mistake of Palace debutant Maxence Lacroix.

Mateta then pulled one back for Palace with a close-range finish from Tyrick Mitchell’s low cross. And in the stoppage time, he made no mistake from the spot as he rolled the ball past Leicester goalkeeper Mads Hermansen.

Deeney has hailed as a “beast”, and kept him in his Team of the Week column for the BBC Sport.

The popular pundit wrote: “He was a beast and an absolute joy to watch. Big, powerful and obviously scored the decisive goal to get them back on track.

“He just led the line really well with Eddie Nketiah behind him. A real threat.”

Jean-Philippe Mateta is player reborn under Oliver Glasner at Crystal Palace

The 27-year-old striker looked like a huge flop under Roy Hodgson, but the past few months have been amazing for him.

Under Glasner, he has become a real superstar, and the Frenchman is now one of the key players at Selhurst Park.

This season, he has scored two goals in the Premier League, and a further two have come in the League Cup.

The goal against Leicester was his first in the league, and Glasner will hope that Mateta will now continue to score freely in the coming games.

Palace are yet to win a game in the Premier League. They have managed two draws in their last two games and will face Manchester United at home in their next Premier League match.
