West Ham interested to sign former Liverpool star Joel Matip

West Ham United were very active this summer as they added many top talents to the squad.

Their most expensive import was Max Kilman, but they also spent good money on signing the likes of Luis Guilherme, Crysencio Summerville, Niclas Fullkrug, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The transfer window closed last month but the Hammers can still sign free agents.

According to the Sunday Mirror (September 15, Page 68), West Ham are interested in former Liverpool star Joel Matip.

The 33-year-old has been without a club since his contract at Anfield expired on June 30.

The experienced defender is reportedly open to offers, and Fulham and Bournemouth are also interested to acquire his services.

Matip was signed by Jurgen Klopp in 2016 and the centre-back went on to make more than 200 appearances for the Reds.

His stint at the Merseyside giants saw him winning the Premier League, the Champions League as well as two Carabao Cups.

Disappointing start

Despite the signings, West Ham have made a disappointing start to the new Premier League season.

In four league matches, they have secured only four points and are currently sitting 14th in the standings.

Julen Lopetegui’s men came close to losing at Fulham on Saturday but Danny Ings ultimately saved the day for them by popping up with a stoppage-time equaliser.

A point from a difficult venue is a positive for West Ham but the performances of some of their players were highly disappointing, particularly Tomas Soucek
