West Ham United weighing up fresh move for Mats Hummels

West Ham United are lining up a surprise move to sign German centre-back Mats Hummels, according to the Times.

The Hammers were linked with the 35-year-old early last month, and while a move did not materialise during the summer transfer window, they remain keen on recruiting his services.

West Ham technical director Tim Steidten wants to get a deal done, but the wages of the former Germany international could prove to be a stumbling block.

Hummels was released by Borussia Dortmund in the summer, and a proposed move to AS Roma stalled over wages.

Real Sociedad have also been linked with the five-time Bundesliga winner but a move to the Premier League for one last dance before retirement could appeal to the former Bayern Munich star.

West Ham want a fourth centre-back behind Maximilian Kilman, Konstantinos Mavropanos and Jean-Clair Todibo after Nayef Aguerd and Kurt Zouma left last week, and they are able to sign a free agent despite the closure of the transfer window.

The highly experienced Hummels fits the bill, but they also have Joel Matip and John Egan on their list after they were released by Liverpool and Sheffield United, respectively.

However, there are also doubts over Matip as the 33-year-old had been out with a cruciate ligament injury since last December before the Reds let him go.

West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui wants one option at the back, and while they will not be parting with a fee for Hummels and co, they may need to meet their personal demands to have a chance given the plethora of options at their disposal due to their status.
