100% long balls, 100% dribbles: Joelinton was Newcastle’s best performer vs Brighton – View

Newcastle United suffered their first home defeat since January after losing 1-0 to Brighton & Hove Albion in Saturday’s Premier League game.

The Magpies dominated proceedings from the beginning and managed to create several goal scoring opportunities.

However, the lack of end product meant they failed to break the deadlock. Alexander Isak miskicked the ball from about eight yards out before shooting straight at the goalkeeper after Sandro Tonali put him clean through.

Their wastefulness in front of goal was soon punished by the visitors as Danny Welbeck stunned the home supporters with a lovely goal in the 35th minute.

The 33-year-old’s strike proved decisive as Brighton held out to seal an excellent 1-0 success at St James’ Park.

Newcastle’s overall performance was good but their poor finishing meant they lost the home match.

Joelinton in particular produced a solid display in midfield, which was very encouraging to see for the fans.

The 28-year-old had 70 touches and completed 42 of his 48 passes (88 percent). He lost possession on 10 occasions but won six of his nine ground duels.

The central midfielder also completed 100% of his long balls and 100% of his dribbles, with three interceptions and three tackles to his name.

Joelinton, who joined the club for £40 million in 2019, has been an important member of Eddie Howe’s team this season. He has started all eight Premier League matches so far, and also scored the decisive goal in their victory over Southampton in August.

The 28-year-old has been averaging 5.5 ball recoveries, 2.8 tackles, and 1.9 clearances per game in the English top-flight this campaign.
