6/9 duels won, 5 clearances: Emil Krafth dazzles in Newcastle’s victory over Chelsea

Newcastle United have progressed to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup after an excellent 2-0 win over Chelsea on Wednesday night.

The Magpies found themselves ahead within the first 23 minutes as Alexander Isak struck from close range after Sandro Tonali intercepted a loose pass just outside the box.

The Tyneside club doubled their advantage three minutes later when Axel Disasi inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.

Chelsea tried hard to make a comeback in the second-half but Eddie Howe’s men held out to seal a brilliant victory, ending their three-game winless run in all competitions.

Most of the Newcastle players impressed with their performances in the Carabao Cup game.

Alexander Isak grabbed all the headlines as the 25-year-old bagged his second goal in four days.

However, Emil Krafth also deserved huge credit as the fringe ace produced a solid display at St James’ Park.

He recovered well against Mykhailo Mudryk to deny a good chance for the Blues late in the first-half.

The 30-year-old also posted impressive numbers in the match. He had 54 touches to his name and completed 25 of his 27 passes (93 percent).

Krafth, who joined the club in 2019 for £5 million, won six of his nine duels and registered five clearances, two tackles and an interception.

The Swedish footballer lost possession on four occasions but contributed a key pass and also completed two dribbles.

Krafth has been an unused substitute in the previous six Premier League matches for Newcastle.

On the back of this performance, he will hope for more first-team opportunities under Eddie Howe.
