Newcastle United have had an underwhelming start to the 2024-25 campaign.
Winning three of their opening eight Premier League matches, the Magpies are currently five points behind the top-four.
Eddie Howe’s side have been winless in the English top-flight since their comeback victory at Wolverhampton Wanderers last month.
They have since suffered two losses and two draws, with their latest fixture seeing them lose 1-0 against Brighton & Hove Albion.
The Seagulls were second best throughout the game but managed to secure all three points after Danny Welbeck’s decisive first-half goal.
However, despite their poor run, Alan Shearer is backing his former team to come away with a point when they meet Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this Sunday.
Poor finishing has been one of their biggest issues but the famous football pundit believes Howe will have worked on the problem.
Shearer also says they will benefit from the confidence boost due to Anthony Gordon signing a new contract.
Writing in his column for the Metro, the 54-year-old said: “Newcastle can get something at Stamford Bridge with another week on the training ground and no midweek game.
“Eddie Howe will have plenty of time to work on their finishing and final ball this week and if they can improve on that, with the confidence of Anthony Gordon signing a new contract, they can go to Chelsea and get a point which will hopefully kick-start their season.
“Chelsea impressed me at Liverpool and are showing signs of progress, so I am expecting this to be a tight game on Sunday. Draw.”
Newcastle performed impressively in their previous home match against Brighton. They created several good scoring chances but poor finishing meant they ultimately lost the home match 1-0.
Eddie Howe is unlikely to make many changes to the team that played at St James’ Park last time. However, Jacob Murphy is likely to be dropped after his disappointing performance against the Seagulls, with Harvey Barnes expected to take his place.
