Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak is high on the list of Barcelona as they eye alternative transfer targets if they miss out on Manchester City hitman Erling Braut Haaland, according to the Sun.
The La Liga leaders are already preparing for life without 36-year-old Poland international striker Robert Lewandowski, and the Newcastle star has emerged as a possible target going forward.
Isak is under contract at St James’ Park until the summer of 2028, but the Magpies are hoping to get him to sign a new deal after his impressive form since joining them from Real Sociedad in August 2022.
However, while the 25-year-old has been in talks with Newcastle over a new deal for several months, there is no obvious sign of progress in negotiations and Barca and co are monitoring the situation as he continues to stall on signing an extension.
The Sweden international wants to become the highest-paid player at SJP and also wants a release clause included in the deal before signing it, and it remains to be seen whether the Toons are ready to listen to his demands.
Barca see Isak as a potential marquee signing who would excite the fans having notched 36 goals in 73 appearances at Newcastle, and they know him well from his time at La Liga.
They were keen on him last summer and could come back knocking next summer if the Magpies continue to struggle to get him to sign a new deal.
Newcastle are no longer under pressure to sell their most-prized possessions after they sorted out their PSR issues in the summer, but a return to Spain to join Barcelona could appeal to Isak, and they may need to meet his demands if they are to be successful in their attempts to convince him to sign an extension.
