BBC pundit seriously impressed by Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven

Tottenham Hotspur produced a masterclass performance on Sunday, beating Manchester United 3-0 in the Premier League at Old Trafford.

It was a dominant performance from Spurs, who tore United apart, even without their injured skipper, Son Heung-Min.

Goals from Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski, and Dominic Solanke sealed all three points for the north London club.

Troy Deeney has been left seriously impressed by the performance of Micky van de Ven who was simply “excellent” during the game. His barnstorming run from his own half created the opening goal, and from there on, Spurs went on to create chances after chances.

United’s misery was further compounded when Bruno Fernandes was sent off three minutes before the break for a lunge at James Maddison. Deeney has already picked him in his team of the week for BBC Sport once, and the pundit says he has been left seriously impressed by the Dutchman.

Deeney said to BBC Sport: “This is the second time he’s been in my team of the week already. Defensively he’s just a joke, I’m so impressed.

“His pace gets a lot of plaudits but the way he defends, the way he sees situations and covers his full-backs is excellent. And obviously another assist to add to a clean sheet in the win at Manchester United, so perfect for him.”

Van de Ven is arguably one of the best defenders in the Premier League. Pundits usually rave about his pace and the distance he covers, but he is equally good in tough situations. He rarely makes mistakes, and he is so vital to Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Against United, he wasn’t tested enough defensively, but he was still instrumental in helping his side maintain a barrage of attacks.

Spurs are aiming to win trophies this season and also finish in the top four, and they need van de Ven to stay fit for the entire season.
