Rangers suffered their second defeat of the 2024-25 season on Sunday, losing 1-0 to Kilmarnock away from Ibrox.
The door was open for the Gers to close the gap with Celtic after the Bhoys drew 2-2 against Aberdeen on Saturday, but they delivered a shockingly poor performance.
With this defeat, Rangers are third in the Scottish Premiership table, six points behind Celtic and Aberdeen at the top, and once again, the Bears are in the same doldrums.
Marley Watkins scored in the 87th minute at Rugby Park as they picked up their first win at home.
Rangers defender John Souttar, who was impressive for Scotland during the international break, couldn’t clear a dropping ball into the box, and it took a deflection off him on the way past Jack Butland.
Chris Sutton elated after Rangers loss
Celtic legend Chris Sutton took to X to share his instant reaction after Rangers defeat.
Sutton said that the Gers are “well and truly Killied”, adding that Celtic and Aberdeen have increased their lead at the top in the process.
“Rangers were well and truly Killied. Well played Kilmarnock,” he wrote.
“A superbly organised and disciplined performance. Celtic and Aberdeen widen the gap at the top.”
It’s the same old story for Rangers
Philippe Clement spoke about working on the side’s mental toughness, but there is little evidence that Rangers are massively improving under him.
They made a wholesome change to the squad in the summer transfer window, but the players they bought have not yet delivered at the expected level.

It has been the same story for the past few seasons. Rangers are making poor starts every season, and it forces the board to sack their manager, resulting in no continuity in development.
Giovanni van Bronckhosrt, Michael Beale, and Clement himself did extremely well once they took the job midway, but they have all made poor starts.
Rangers are unlikely to sack Clement, as it doesn’t make sense at the moment, but the Gers fans will be really frustrated with the lack of progress under him.
