Dimitar Berbatov blasts Destiny Udogie for Brighton’s first goal as Tottenham Hotspur lose 3-2

Tottenham Hotspur suffered their third Premier League defeat of 2024-25 at the hands of Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, with the hosts scoring thrice in the second-half to run out 3-2 winners.

Brennan Johnson and James Maddison put Spurs ahead in the first-half, but Brighton bounced back with a brilliant display in the second-half, with Destiny Udogie at fault for their first goal.

The Italy international made a mess of clearing a low cross and Yankuba Minteh capitalised to score and kick start the comeback for the Seagulls.

It is the 10th time that Tottenham have lost a Premier League game in which they have led by two or more goals, becoming the first club to hit double figures for this, and at least three more than any other side in the history of the English top-flight.

Dimitar Berbatov was unimpressed with Udogie, slamming the Spurs star for his error.

“I think it’s a rookie mistake,” the former Tottenham striker said on Sky Sports.

“He’s had games under his belt, he should do better than this.”

Spurs were on a run of five consecutive victories across all competitions heading into the game against Brighton, and it appeared they were on course to secure a sixth win heading into the October international break following a brilliant start to the game.

However, the hosts had other ideas and Tottenham were not mentally strong enough to weather the storm and hold on to their lead after conceding the first goal.

The 1-1 draw against Leicester City, 2-1 loss to Newcastle United and 1-0 defeat to Arsenal also featured similar patterns, and manager Ange Postecoglou has plenty of work to do to get his side to do better going forward.

Their defending was far from impressive today, and that needs to change significantly if they are to win their first trophy since 2008 anytime soon.
