Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel conceded a late goal as Denmark lost 1-0 against Spain on Saturday night in the UEFA Nations League game.
The 37-year-old joined Celtic in the summer transfer window on a free transfer, and he has been the first-choice under Brendan Rodgers.
He has made seven starts in the Premier League and has conceded only one goal so far. However, in the Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmund, the Hoops conceded seven goals, although Schmeichel cannot be blamed for that.
Overall, he has proved to be a terrific signing for the club. The Premier League winner with Leicester City has been a towering presence for Denmark over the years, and he is still the best option the country has at the moment.
How the Danish press reacted to Kasper Schmeichel’s display v Spain
Danish newspaper B.T. has praised the veteran goalkeeper for making some great saves during the game, and they called it a “work of art worthy of Picasso”.
However, his blunder for the goal has made him the “biggest villain” of the match, as the newspaper gave him a two-star rating.
They wrote the headline: “Schmeichel committed vandalism”.
The goalkeeper said after the game that he couldn’t sight the ball cleanly but admitted he could have done differently.
He said after the game: “I didn’t see the ball to begin with. It hit Pierre-Emile and then I had to bet a little bit on the ball going left. I didn’t manage to read the screw on the ball and then got too far over it.
“That’s life as a goalkeeper. We live on the edge, where something like this can always happen.”
Brendan Rodgers will not mind odd bloopers from the Celtic star
Schmeichel is absolutely spot on here. The life of a goalkeeper is always on the edge. He can make tons of great saves in a match, but it will just take one error from him to ruin all his hard work.
The Celtic boss will not mind Schmeichel’s odd mistakes. He is a vastly experienced goalkeeper, and Rodgers knows that the Danish star will come back strongly and deliver for the Scottish giants after the break.
It has been a frustrating night for the Hoops goalkeeper, as Denmark will feel they could have got something from the game.
