‘Excellent’ – BBC pundit praises West Ham star Edson Alvarez after excellent display vs Manchester United

West Ham United registered a 2-1 victory over Manchester United on Sunday after Jarrod Bowen’s injury-time penalty.

The Hammers made a poor start to the London Stadium encounter as United dominated possession and chances in the first-half.

However, the visitors’ failure to convert their chances meant the scoreline remained 0-0 until the break.

Manager Julen Lopetegui made several changes at half-time and West Ham came out much improved in the next half.

Crysencio Summerville broke the deadlock by tapping in at the far post before Casemiro levelled the scores on 81 minutes.

However, the Hammers had the last laugh as Bowen converted the controversial spot-kick awarded after Matthijs de Ligt’s challenge on Danny Ings in the box.

Summerville and Bowen received a lot of praise but BBC football pundit Troy Deeney was left particularly impressed by Edson Alvarez.

The Ex-Watford star included the 27-year-old in his Premier League team of the week,  calling the player ‘excellent’.

Writing in his column for BBC Sport, Deeney said: “Both midfielders (Ryan Yates and Alvarez) were excellent. They were combative and did everything simple and well. In times when their games got a little bit ropey they stepped up, whether it be with a big tackle or calming the play down and winning fouls. They were excellent and two players who epitomised their teams in their necessity to find a win. West Ham needed that win against Manchester United and it was a good result for them”.

Julen Lopetegui featured Edson Alvarez off the bench in the previous two league matches.

But the Spanish boss started the 27-year-old in Sunday’s big game against Manchester United and the player repaid the faith of his manager with an excellent performance.

The Mexican kept things nice and tidy in midfield and was accurate with his passing all game.

Alvarez also completed 100% long balls and registered three interceptions and three clearances.

On the back of this performance, he is likely to keep his place in the team for their visit to Nottingham Forest next week.
