Southampton are struggling in the Premier League at the moment and they are without a win so far.
Russell Martin’s side spent heavily in the summer transfer window, and the squad has gone through a major overhaul.
However, they have scored only three goals in their opening six games, and conceded 12 goals. The Saints have picked up just one point and find themselves 19th in the league table.
While there’s plenty of time for them to turn the situation around, Gabby Agbonlahor says that he thinks Southampton will go down this season.
Speaking on talkSPORT live on Andy Goldstein’s show (1 October), the football pundit said: “Minus nine (GD) after six games, is it? It is not good enough and they won’t stay up. Just a bit of disaster when it happens.”
Southampton are really struggling
The Saints are really struggling at the moment, and they need to sort their defence out. They are way too expansive at times and are struggling against teams that are pressing hard.
So, basically, all teams have found their weakness. Martin needs to do something to counter the problem. Is changing a manager early at the start of the season a solution? Probably not, but at some point, the Saints might consider that option if the results do not improve.
The next games are absolutely vital for Southampton. While they are not expected to win against Arsenal, Manchester City, and Liverpool in the next six games, the Saints need to win games against other struggling teams like Leicester City, Wolves and Everton.
A victory will lift the mood around the stadium, but the recent defeats show that the players are already lacking confidence. While it is still early to predict whether Southampton will be relegated, one can say with some confidence that the Saints have a tough battle on their hands to stay alive this season.
