Greek media praises West Ham defender after excellent performance in Nations League win

Greece registered a memorable 2-1 win over England on Thursday night at Wembley after a stoppage-time winner from Vangelis Pavlidis.

Ivan Jovanovic’s side put the ball in the net five times only to see three of them ruled out for offside.

Greece scored their first goal early in the second half when Pavlidis collected the ball inside the area and despite plenty of England players around him, the 25-year-old hit the target with a fine finish.

Interim manager Lee Carsley quickly made a few changes to make a comeback and looked to have salvaged a draw after Jude Bellingham fired high past the goalkeeper in the 87th minute.

However, in a dramatic late twist, Pavlidis punished some woeful defending to beat Jordan Pickford with a composed finish, and Greece sealed a memorable victory at Wembley.

The Benfica forward deservedly grabbed all the headlines but West Ham United defender Konstantinos Mavropanos also received a lot of praise for his excellent performance.

Greek outlet SDNA gave him a 8/10 rating, hailing his aerial dominance.

Dominant in the air and at the same time with correct placements on the Englishmen’s vertical balls. Very big match from the West Ham stopper”.

Mavropanos won all his ground duels against England and completed 30 of his 34 passes (88 percent). He also registered four clearances, two tackles and an interception.

The 26-year-old has recently lost his starting berth to Jean-Calir Todibo at West Ham.

He has produced an excellent performance for his country this week but we don’t think this will convince Julen Lopetegui to start him against Tottenham Hotspur after the international break.
