Gyokeres not on Man United radar, but Amorim could spark transfer scramble

Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres isn’t currently on Manchester United’s shopping list despite the club angling to hire Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim, according to Sky Germany.

While Man United fans might be looking for attacking reinforcements, Florian Plettenberg has claimed the Reds are not in for the Sporting CP man. However, the potential arrival of Ruben Amorim as manager could throw a spanner in the works.

“Was told that Manchester United is currently not in the race for Viktor Gyokeres, the German journalist tweeted. It’s a matter of waiting to see what would happen if Amorim becomes the new coach.

“In England, the four clubs mentioned are particularly active for him: Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea. He is allowed to leave Sporting next summer for 60-70 million euros, as revealed in our show Transfer Update. A transfer in the summer is planned.”

United are accelerating plans to hire the Portuguese coach, and he might want to bring along his trusted general. Gyokeres joined Sporting from Coventry City in the summer of 2023 and spearheaded the club to their second Primeira Liga title under Amorim.

While Amorim’s side was notably possession-focused, Gyokeres gave them a different dimension in transition. The former Brighton & Hove Albion star recorded 43 goals and 15 assists in 50 games for the Portuguese giants.

He has started this season in equally sensational form, registering 14 goals and five assists in 14 appearances across all competitions.

However, per the reports, United aren’t actively pursuing Gyokeres. They already have Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee in the ranks. If Amorim signs for United, he might need to focus on improving the players on the roster.

Amorim could yet ask for Gyokeres when he takes the reins at Old Trafford, and his influence could trigger a transfer battle for the ages.

Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea are all reportedly interested in the prolific striker, and Sporting will demand around £58 million for his services.
