Fabrizio Romano has shared an interesting update on Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose long-term future at Anfield has become a hot topic in recent weeks.
The Liverpool vice-captain is in the final year of his contract with his boyhood club, but there haven’t been any concrete updates regarding a renewal, sparking rumours of a potential summer exit.
Alexander-Arnold will be free to agree a pre-contract agreement with any of his potential suitors by January and record European champions Real Madrid are closely monitoring his situation.
The 25-year-old has been relaxed about the situation, hinting that a potential new deal will be sorted out privately.
Romano has now shed more light on Alexander-Arnold’s contract dilemma, shutting down rumours that the player has been in talks with Madrid over a potential free exit this summer.
“Since March, the situation has not changed,” Romano said on his YouTube channel. “Real Madrid maintain their interest in the situation of Trent Alexander-Arnold.
“What I’m told is that today, Real Madrid are not negotiating with Alexander-Arnold – they are not discussing terms of a contract, salary, or project.
“We’re not in the advanced stages of the story, but the interest of Real Madrid is something that has been mentioned for months.
“To see what’s going to happen this summer depends on Liverpool because they have the priority and are talking to Alexander-Arnold, and we will see what they decide together.”
Alexander-Arnold has been a staple in the Liverpool defence since coming through the ranks as a teenager, and has established himself as one of the best right-backs in European football.
Madrid are looking for a long-term successor to Dani Carvajal, and Los Blancos have identified Alexander-Arnold as a dream target, but Liverpool would be silly to let such an asset leave the club for free.
Along with Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool stalwarts Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk are also out of contract at the end of the season.
