Former Germany and Bayern Munich manager Jurgen Klinsmann has backed Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez to become a ‘top-class’ striker despite his performance against Bologna.
The Reds picked up where they left off in the curtain-raiser against AC Milan, swatting aside their Serie A counterparts in a comfortable 2-0 victory.
Alexis Mac Allister opened the scoring just 11 minutes into the game with his first goal of the season before Mohamed Salah wrapped up the three points with a 75th-minute strike.
Nunez was named in the starting line-up in place of Diogo Jota but struggled to affect the game despite spending just over an hour on the pitch.
The Uruguayan had just 23 touches in the game. He had a shot on target and won two of his four aerial duels.
Nunez was subsequently replaced by Jota, but Klinsmann had seen enough to believe the former Benfica star still has what it takes to perform at the highest level.
“I absolutely believe he [Nunez] has the talent and the quality to play on the highest level in the Premier League and also in the Champions League,” Klinsmann said on ESPN.
“It’s just a question of consistency. He still hasn’t figured it out yet – how to be consistent at the highest level. He gives you brilliant games, and then you don’t see him for a couple of weeks.
“I hope that he can work that out down the road, but I still believe that he has everything in order to be a top-class striker.”
Nunez has featured seven times across all competitions this season, but his only goal so far came in the 3-0 Premier League win over Bournemouth at Anfield.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot will have to decide who leads the line when the Reds travel to Selhurst Park to take on Crystal Palace in the Premier League this weekend.
The Merseyside giants will be keen to extend their winning streak to six games on the bounce across all competitions.
