Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister shares how he feels playing in a different position under Slot

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has revealed how much he’s enjoying his new role under manager Arne Slot this season.

Since joining Liverpool from Brighton & Hove Albion, Mac Allister was largely deployed as a defensive midfielder under Jurgen Klopp.

Even though it wasn’t his natural position, he excelled in the role, but Slot’s arrival has tweaked the set-up, allowing the Argentine more freedom in the middle of the park.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Serie A side, Mac Allister said (via James Pearce): “My position is quite different this season.

“I know where my teammates are going to be. I feel comfortable, and I really like the ideas.”

He further clarified his new role (via Liverpoolfc.com): “Yes, maybe last season. I played most of the year as a six, so my position is quite different, but at the same time, we have a lot of freedom.

“We try to have a structure and know where our teammates are going to be, but we have freedom as well, and sometimes it could be just Ryan [Gravenberch] as a six, or sometimes it could be a double six and Dom [Szoboszlai] as a No.10.

“So, it changes a lot during the game. What I can say is that I feel really comfortable, and I really like the idea, so I am really enjoying my football, and hopefully, tomorrow, we can show it.”

Mac Allister has been a key player for Liverpool this season, featuring in all eight games across all competitions, although he’s yet to open his goalscoring account.

He’s expected to anchor the midfield alongside Gravenberch on Wednesday evening, with Liverpool keen to extend their winning streak to five games across all competitions.

The Reds will head into the Champions League contest on the back of a 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers, which lifted them to the top of the Premier League table.

Slot will likely shuffle the pack against Bologna with one eye on next weekend’s Premier League trip to Crystal Palace.
