Manchester United are in the process of hiring Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim as their new head coach. The Reds quickly identified the 39-year-old as their ideal replacement following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag.
United fans are excited over the prospect of his arrival. He is one of the most highly-touted young managers in world football.
Amorim has clear ideas and a winner’s resume. He won Sporting their first title in 19 years and delivered a second Primeira Liga last season alongside two domestic cups and the Super Cup.
However, many have not considered the massive work the Portuguese coach has ahead of him. United have a poorly recruited squad, and there are significant concerns over whether the players on the roster fit the bill.
Speaking on talkSPORT alongside former Man United assistant manager Mike Phelan, Simon Jordan drew attention to it.
“There is a school of thought that arguably this is the worst Man United squad that has ever been assembled as long as people can remember,” Jordan started.
“Despite the fact that he is coming into this prized asset, Man United, he is coming into a challenging environment.” To this, Phelan vehemently nodded and said, “Correct.”
Besides the structural deficiencies in the United ranks, the club’s recruitment since Sir Alex Ferguson retired has been haphazard. They have shelled out ungodly sums to sign average players who were never worth the punt.
United shelled out £72 million for a striker that had never hit the 20-league goal threshold. They spent another £52 million on a midfielder Chelsea were eager to discard for his poor performances.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS team took charge of football operations, and the recruitment has not improved markedly.
They ponied money for another young striker with no outstanding scoring season behind him despite there being more experienced, prolific, and cheaper options on the market.
Amorim is walking into a dugout that has swallowed Jose Mourinho and David Moyes. He has a monumental challenge staring him squarely. It is an unenviable task.
The pressure will be immense as he seeks to revitalise a team that desperately needs a cohesive strategy and identity.
The stakes are high, and while the prospect of his appointment excites many, the reality of the situation demands careful navigation and robust decision-making.
