Newcastle United endured an underwhelming summer transfer window as they failed to make a marquee addition.
Their month-long pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi ultimately ended in failure, with the South Londoners even rejecting their final offer worth up to £70 million.
They also chased a deadline day move for Nottingham Forest star Anthony Elanga but couldn’t secure a deal despite an offer worth a potential £50m.
However The Athletic are now reporting the Magpies are still interested in signing the 22-year-old when the transfer window reopens in January.
The sensational forward is an academy graduate of Manchester United where he progressed through its youth ranks to make 55 senior appearances.
However, the Red Devils allowed him to join Forest in the summer of 2023 for £15m. His stocks have massively increased since joining the Tricky Trees as he has been a key member of their first-team.
Elanga hasn’t made an explosive start this campaign, registering a single assist in seven Premier League appearances. But it is still early in the season and he is expected to make a bigger impact in the coming months.
The 22-year-old could be a good addition to Eddie Howe’s squad. The Tyneside club are looking to sell Miguel Almiron who has only 18 months remaining on his current contract.
Elanga could be a good replacement for the Paraguayan footballer who reportedly has an interest from Fulham.
However, it remains to be seen whether they can convince Forest to let one of their important players leave in January.
