Preview: Barcelona vs Sevilla - stats, team news, line-ups

Top of the table Barcelona welcome struggling Sevilla to the Estadi Olímpic with three points up for the taking.

The Catalans want to maintain their stronghold at the summit, while the Andalusians are just trying to keep their head above water, and the stage is set for a fascinating game.

Given their recent form and resurgence under Flick’s leadership, Barca fans will fancy their chances of dethroning Real Madrid this season.

They’ll be getting their Barcelona tickets from Seatsnet.com to watch Flick’s side, hoping they can extend their ruthless streak this weekend.

Match Preview

Barca have been in ruthless form this season, devouring every opponent on their path under new boss Hansi Flick.

They raised the curtains with a 2-1 win over Valencia thanks to Robert Lewandowski’s brace.

Two more 2-1 results followed against Athletic Bilbao and Rayo Vallecano before Flick’s young squad went on a rampage, ravaging Real Valladolid 7-0 in one of the most dominant showings you’ll ever see on a football pitch.

Barca then thumped Girona 4-1 before absolutely mullering Villarreal 5-1 and claiming a narrow 1-0 win over Getafe. They suffered their first and only loss to the season against Osasuna in the next game.

Flick underestimated the Pamplona outfit and fielded a second-string XI.

However, the decision backfired spectacularly as Vicente Moreno’s side constantly exploited the gaps behind Barca’s backline, exposed by their weak press and spacing.

Barca bounced back with a 3-0 win over Alaves before the October international break and will look to make it two on the trot against Sevilla.

Barcelona are scoring goals with reckless abandon. They have already found the back of the net 28 times in nine games (an average of three goals per game).

Barcelona have generated more xG (22.80) than any other team in Europe’s top 5 leagues this season.

Lewandowski tops the La Liga goalscoring chart with ten goals, showing the form he displayed at Bayern Munich under Flick in that 2019/20 season, where he bagged 55 goals and spearheaded the Bavarians to the treble.

Meanwhile, prodigy Lamine Yamal has provided the most assists this season. Sevilla have a mountain to climb.

Sevilla also hired a new coach this summer after a disastrous 2023/24 campaign saw Los Nervionenses finish in 14th spot in the table, their worst final position since being relegated from the top flight in 2000.

They snipped the impressive Garcia Pimienta, who made his name coaching Las Palmas following his time in the Barcelona youth system.

Pimienta’s positional football is revered, although he has not had the perfect start to life at his new club. His first few games in charge were particularly rough.

Coincidentally, his first game at Sevilla came against his former side and ended in a 2-2 draw. They lost to Villarreal and Girona and drew Real Mallorca.

Their first three points of the season came against Getafe on matchday five. But another demoralising loss followed, this time against Alaves.

They have picked up crucial points since then, claiming wins against Real Valladolid and Real Betis despite receiving red cards in both games. They also secured a draw against the dangerous Bilbao.

The Andulasians have won three, drawn three, and lost three, leaving them in 13th place. Despite their financial handicap, they will be eyeing a place in the top half of the La Liga table.

Head to Head

Barcelona are the overwhelming favourites to claim all three points on Sunday, considering their recent results against Sevilla.

Barcelona have won their last five meetings with the Seville-based side, conceding only once while netting ten times.

Sevilla have not tasted La Liga victory over Barcelona since 2015, when Vicente Iborra and Michael Krohn-Dehli bagged to give them a slender 2-1 win.

Before that, their last win was in March 2007 and not since December 2002 have they managed to beat the Catalan giants away from home.

Sevilla have recorded only one win over Barcelona in their last 14 clashes across all competitions (L10, D3).

However, Sevilla will take some solace from their recent results after picking up seven from the last nine available points. They have only lost once in their previous five games (W3, D1).

Team News

Barcelona are without goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen following a knee injury that required surgery last month. It is unclear if Flick will continue with Inaki Pena between the sticks or start free transfer Wojciech Szczesny.

Ferran Torres, Marc Bernal, Andreas Christensen, and Ronald Araujo are all missing from this weekend’s contest.

However, Flick received a massive boost as Gavi, Fermin Lopez, and Dani Olmo are all in the squad against Sevilla, even though it will be shocking to see any of them in the starting line-up.

The German will be delighted to have Lewandowski back fit and firing after sustaining a knock while on international duty with Poland. Yamal was sent home from the Spanish training camp but is reportedly fit to face Sevilla.

Meanwhile, Sevilla must deal with the absence of Saul Niguez (thigh injury) and Djibril Sow. The Atletico Madrid man is out for two months, while Sow has been nursing an injury he suffered towards the end of last season.

Former Bayern centre-back Tanguy Nianzou is suspended after being sent off in the Seville derby against Real Betis in the last game.

Kike Salas will likely step in for the Frenchman, but other than that, Pimienta is expected to field practically the same XI he did for the Betis fixture.

Barcelona’s Potential Starting Line-up

(4-3-3): Inaki Pena; Jules Kounde, Pau Cubarsi, Inigo Martinez, Alejandro Balde; Marc Casado, Eric Garcia, Pedri; Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha.

Sevilla’s Potential Starting Line-up

(4-2-3-1): Orjan Nyland; Jose Carmona, Loic Bade, Kike Salas, Adria Pedrosa; Lucien Agoume, Nemanja Gudelj; Dodi Lukebakio, Gerard Fernandez, Chidera Ejuke; Isaac Romero.

Prediction

Barcelona should deliver another emphatic performance against Sevilla, securing an overwhelming victory at the Estadi Olímpic.

The Catalans have been in exceptional form this season, outclassing their opponents with clinical efficiency and relentless attacking pressure.

Despite their recent improvements, Sevilla face an uphill battle against a Barcelona side brimming with confidence and talent.

Olmo being back in the squad gives Barca an extra fearsome attacking threat, and they will look to overwhelm their opponents.

The Andalusians have struggled to match the intensity and quality of their opponents, and their defensive vulnerabilities could be exposed against Barcelona’s attacking quartet.

Lewandowski is expected to continue his goalscoring spree, capitalising on Barcelona’s dominant possession and creating numerous scoring chances.

Yamal and Raphinha, on the other hand, have been instrumental in providing assists and stretching the opposition’s defence.

Sevilla’s defensive frailties and lack of attacking potency in front of goal make it difficult to see them posing a significant threat to Barcelona’s goal.

The Catalan giants’ superior quality and home advantage give them the edge, and a comfortable victory is the most likely outcome.

Prediction: Barca 4-1 Sevilla
