Arsenal star Bukayo Saka played a starring role as the Gunners claimed a 2-0 win in the UEFA Champions League over Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain.
The England international was captain on the night and delivered a performance worthy of the armband. His free-kick in the 35th minute went through a crowd and found the back of the net.
It was the first direct free-kick Arsenal have recorded in the Champions League since Thierry Henry scored one versus AS Roma in November 2002.
Saka’s overall performance was more impressive. He had PSG left-back Nuno Mendes on skates throughout the game, carving out multiple chances for himself and his teammates.
Speaking to CBS Sports pundit and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry after the game, Saka said he didn’t want to put too much pressure on his teammates but that this was the year to end their 20-year wait for a Premier League title.
Former Arsenal star Ray Parlour wasn’t buying it, claiming Saka had to give that response. Parlour believes the Gunners have a chance but didn’t back them to see it over the line.
“I’m going to say they’ve got a chance, a very good chance, but it doesn’t mean they are going to win it,” Parlour said on talkSPORT alongside Alan Brazil.
While the Gunners have shown significant improvement and have come close to winning the Premier League twice in recent seasons, their inability to consistently deliver in crunch moments has raised doubts about their championship credentials.
Parlour’s scepticism is understandable, given Arsenal’s history of falling short when it matters most.
The pressure on Mikel Arteta and his team will only intensify as the season progresses. They must maintain their momentum, address any weaknesses, and demonstrate the mental fortitude required to withstand the challenges of a title race.
Ultimately, only time will tell if Arsenal can overcome their past disappointments and finally claim the Premier League trophy after a two-decade wait or even win that elusive Champions League title.
