Liverpool secured their fifth successive win in all competitions on Wednesday as they comfortably beat Bologna 2-0 at Anfield in the Champions League.
The Reds took the lead after just 11 minutes, with Alexis Mac Allister scoring from close range after Mohamed Salah’s excellent low cross.
The Egyptian star then got in on the act himself in the 75th minute as he curled a wonderful effort into the top corner.
Salah deservedly grabbed all the headlines, but Steve McManaman believes Trent Alexander-Arnold should also be praised for his role in the goal.
The former Liverpool star praises Salah for his excellent finish but feels it was Trent’s unselfish run that opened things up for his teammate.
He told BBC Sport: “It’s a brilliant goal. That goal doesn’t happen unless Trent Alexander-Arnold runs. Trent Alexander-Arnold should get the assist but once he cuts in onto his left with space he had it was always going to end up in the back of the net.
“Brilliant unselfish play from the right-back”.
Trent Alexander-Arnold has often been criticised for his poor defending. He has been guilty of being caught out of position and giving away possession sometimes.
However, it should also be appreciated how much he offers in attack, playing a key role in their attacking buildup.
The talented right-back has started all six Premier League matches for Liverpool this season, with an assist to his name.
He has been averaging 1.0 shots, 2.06 assists and 2.5 key passes per game in the English top-flight.
The 25-year-old has also been posting impressive defensive numbers, registering 2.5 tackles, 4.3 ball recoveries and 0.7 interceptions per match.
With his contract expiring in 2025, the club are trying hard to tie him down to a new deal.
