Tottenham Hotspur continued their 100% record in the Europa League with a 2-1 victory over Ferencvaros in Hungary.
Spurs went ahead in the 29th minute thanks to a well-taken goal from Pape Matar Sarr. Right-back Pedro Porro played a crucial role, carrying the ball forward and into the heart of the opponent’s backline before the ball fell to the Senegal international.
Porro had a lively performance and continued to help Spurs probe the Ferencvaros rearguard. In one move, he nutmegged a couple of players before unleashing a curling effort that failed to find the back of the net.
Former Tottenham star and manager Glenn Hoddle was left awestruck by the move while on punditry duty for TNT Sports. “It was a great bit of play,” he enthused. “He’s unlucky, terrific play from Porro.”
Porro has been in fantastic form for Spurs this term. He is arguably the most consistent performer in the team.
The Spaniard is an attacking force down the right flank, recording one goal and one big chance created in six Premier League outings.
He has improved defensively and is more assured in his one-on-one duels, making him a complete asset for manager Ange Postecoglou.
Many expected the Australian coach to bench Porro to allow him to rest and recover, but he opted to start him in Budapest.
Brennan Johnson scored the second to ensure the victory, taking his tally to five goals in his last five games.
Tottenham’s win on away soil puts them in a strong position as they have now won their first two games of the revamped Europa League group stage.
Despite going a man down early, they rallied to defeat Qarabag FK in the opener before claiming another scalp with victory over the Hungarian league champions.
Spurs will be looking to make a deep run into the tournament and have set themselves on the right path with two wins from two.
